Termites (also commonly referred to as white ants) love hot and humid environments, which is why they thrive in certain parts of Australia. It is estimated that around one in three buildings will suffer termite damage at some point in their lives in Australia, which is more likely than damage caused by fire, storm and floods combined.
All too often the presence of these silent invaders goes undetected and though the problem is so severe, many building owners will come to find out that this type of damage is not covered by most home insurance policies.
If you have a problem with white ants – or would like to have a building inspected – iPest Management can help. Based in Camden, our pest control experts offer termite control in Liverpool, Narellan, Camden, Campbelltown and throughout Sydney’s south west.
The problem with termite damage is that it is not obvious until it is too late. These creepy crawlies eat through timber from the inside to out, meaning that by the time the damage is apparent to random inspection, the integrity of structural timbers to your home has already been compromised.
That is why it is so important to have annual inspections. You should have a trained professional pest technician check your home for any existing infestation or possible likelihood of termite attack in prone areas of your home.
It is for that reason that the Building Code and Australian Standard for Termite Protection now require for all new homes being built to be protected against the concealed entry of subterranean termites from the ground into the building.
The Standard does advise that even a correctly installed and complete barrier system cannot 100% guarantee prevention of attack, as termites can potentially breach or bridge over the barrier. But evidence of white ants bridging or breaching a barrier can be easily detected during regular termite inspections.
Therefore, the Australian Standard for Termite Protection (AS3660) recommends that regular competent inspections be carried out at least once a year or more frequently in areas of higher risk or known activity.
A yearly inspection by a licensed professional is the safest way to detect, treat and prevent termite activity in new or existing homes.
